March is National Nutrition Month!

National Nutrition Month is celebrated every March and is sponsored by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in the United States. National Nutrition Month focuses on helping people to make correct food choices as well as developing good eating and exercising habits.

This is a great time to think and learn more about the food we are putting in our bodies.

Some ideas for this month:

Eat More Fresh Foods

  • Visit a local farmers' market for seasonal produce.
  • Try a new fruit or vegetable each week.
  • Prep fresh snacks like sliced cucumbers, carrot sticks, or berries for easy access.
  • Incorporate more salads into your meals with homemade dressings.
  • Make fresh smoothies with leafy greens, fruits, and nuts.

Avoid Fast Food

  • Meal prep simple, healthy dishes for busy days.
  • Keep healthy grab-and-go snacks like nuts, yogurt, or hummus with veggies.
  • Make homemade versions of your favorite fast-food meals, like a healthier burger or wrap.
  • Carry a reusable water bottle and healthy snacks to avoid impulse fast-food stops.
  • Find a quick and easy 10-minute meal recipe to rely on when you’re short on time.

Check Nutrition Labels on the Food You Eat

  • Start by focusing on sugar, sodium, and ingredient lists.
  • Compare different brands to find healthier options.
  • Look for hidden ingredients like added sugars (e.g., high fructose corn syrup).
  • Use apps that scan and analyze nutrition labels for healthier choices.
  • Learn to identify artificial additives and preservatives.

Choose Whole Grains

  • Swap white rice for brown rice or quinoa.
  • Try whole-grain pasta, bread, and tortillas instead of refined versions.
  • Experiment with grains like farro, bulgur, or barley in salads and soups.
  • Make oatmeal your go-to breakfast instead of sugary cereals.
  • Bake with whole wheat flour instead of refined white flour.

Start Planning Your Garden!

  • Research which fruits, veggies, and herbs grow best in your area.
  • Start seedlings indoors for an early start on the season.
  • Plan a small herb garden if space is limited.
  • Consider companion planting for natural pest control.
  • Set up a compost bin to create nutrient-rich soil.
