Getting a Head Start

One of HCCM’s food programs is our Fresh Produce Drop.  This is part of our Fresh Food for All program, but instead of a farmer’s market style distribution, we just “drop” off produce at several locations, such as Head Start programs or low-income housing apartments. We also provided some fresh produce at one of our locations for their Trunk or Treat event to distribute in addition to the candy.

One of our Head Start programs encouraged their families to report on how they made use of the fresh produce they received, and we got some darling results!!

Here are some of the comments we received:

Mateo’s Mom made Soup w/ potatoes & zucchini and also made Mexican style zucchini and cheese she received from our Trunk or Treat!  She also made him a smoothie with Fresh Food for All bananas donation and with his help in scraping the carrots and potatoes skins off, mom made some chicken with potatoes and carrots and hatch peppers for dinner!

Mercer & Jameson helped us cut the carrots as we prepped a soup base to freeze! And we stuffed pepper w/cream cheese & wrapped them in bacon to take them out to a friend’s house from the hatch peppers we got in September! Thank you, Fresh Food for All!

Kyle-  for the September Fresh Food for All donations of sweet potatoes, I washed, peeled, boiled, and drained the sweet potatoes. Added them to the blender along with some distilled water and Evie has sweet potato baby food. We will do the same with some of the carrots (leaving most for Kyle because he loves carrots.) Thank you, Fresh Food for All!

Miguel’s family making French fries w/Trunk or Treat potatoes!

We are so happy that these families are able to receive fresh produce and teach their children how to prepare healthy foods!
