Many of our elders, families and medically compromised neighbors are at a much higher risk of heat-related illnesses and dehydration during the summer months. Hill Country Community Ministries has been an official Summer Fan Drive partner with Family Eldercare for the past 10 years. We are able to distribute several fans depending on family size to these neighbors who might possibly be suffering due to no air conditioner, a broken A/C unit, or the cost to run their A/C is simply too much. The qualifications include financial trouble, age 55+, disability, and/or children under age 18.
According to Family Eldercare, these are some of the statistics surrounding those we help with fans:
Average monthly income: $1087
Average age: 56
65% can’t afford food on their own
49% have felt sick from the heat
52% are living with a disability
90% don’t have or can’t afford A/C
37% of older Central Texans live with pets in hot homes
The Leander Police Department will be having a “Cans & Fans Drive” to support these efforts. Summertime is traditionally a tough time to keep pantry shelves full also. You can contribute by dropping off canned goods and box fans at the Police Department from June 3 – 17th, Monday through Friday, 8AM – 5 PM, in the main lobby at 705 Leander Drive, Leander.
Anyone who qualifies and is in need of a fan may come to the HCCM facility at 1005 Lacy Drive, Leander, to request a fan. Our business hours are: 9 AM – 12 PM, and 1 PM – 3 PM, Monday through Friday, with extended hours on Thursdays until 7 PM.
Stay cool, friends!!
