With children home from school for the summer, we know many families face a greater need for food. That’s why Hill Country Community Ministries launched Summer Second Helpings several years ago.
Typically, our full-service clients receive one food order per month. These orders—based on family size—weigh between 127 and 205 pounds and are valued (at H-E-B prices) between $325 and $552. Each order includes shelf-stable items (cans and boxes), plus fresh produce, eggs, cheese, frozen meats, hygiene products, diapers, and feminine care items.
Through the Summer Second Helpings program, families with school-age children can receive an additional monthly food order during the summer. While slightly modified, these “second helpings” give families access to nearly double the food—when they need it most.
So far this summer, we’ve provided nearly 150 Second Helpings—and we've received many heartfelt notes of gratitude from the families we serve.
