HCCM’s Christmas Stockings: How One Volunteer Started a Holiday Tradition

The Christmas Stocking Program at Hill Country Community Ministries began with a single moment of compassion from volunteer Donna Meek. In 2017, Donna met a client who shared that she planned to skip her family’s Christmas because she had nothing to give grandchildren. Donna couldn’t let her face the holiday empty-handed. She put together two Christmas stockings and invited the client to stop by. The woman was shocked, grateful, and finally felt confident enough to attend her family celebration. That experience showed Donna just how meaningful even a small gift can be.

Since then Donna has continued pouring her heart into this holiday tradition each year. What began as a simple gesture has grown into a program that now serves 100-125 families every Christmas. This year, HCCM has prepared 135 stockings, each thoughtfully packed with treats and stocking stuffers for children, seniors, and families in need. Donna enjoys choosing items that will make each stocking feel personal and special.

Over the years, she has seen many touching moments, but one stands out. A client with Down Syndrome mentioned how much the girl loves art. Donna created a custom art-themed stocking for her. “She was so happy,” Donna recalls.

Thanks to Donna’s dedication and the support of HCCM volunteers, the Christmas Stocking Program has become a bright light for many local families. It reminds us that kindness spreads, traditions grow, and small gestures can make a big difference.
