Can I Donate This? Food Pantry FAQs

We often get calls and emails from people asking, "What can I donate to HCCM?" It's a great question—and one we love to hear! To make things easier, we’ve pulled together some of the most Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about donations. If you’ve ever wondered what’s needed or how to help—this is a great place to start!

1. What kinds of food should I donate?

  • Answer: Our food pantry needs non-perishable items, such as:
    • Canned goods (vegetables, fruits, soups, beans)
    • Cereal and oatmeal
    • Pasta
    • Canned proteins (tuna, chicken, salmon)
    • Peanut butter and jelly
    • Granola bars and snacks
    • Canned or boxed meals (mac and cheese, chili, ravioli)
    • Shelf-stable milk (like powdered milk or boxed milk)
    • Pasta sauces and canned tomato products
  • You can check our “Items most Needed” list on our website:  https://hccm.org/get-involved/donate-food.html

2. Can I donate fresh fruits and vegetables from my garden?

  • Answer: HCCM will accept vegetables from home gardens.  As you may know, we have our own garden beds and are able to supply the pantry and Community Cupboard with extra produce.

3. Are there any food items that I should avoid donating?

  • Answer: It’s best to avoid donating:
    • Items that are expired or close to expiration
    • Homemade items (because of safety and labeling concerns)
    • Opened or partially used items
    • Items that have been refrigerated or frozen in a home fridge of freezer

4. Can I donate baby food, formula, or diapers?

  • Answer: We are happy to receive donations of baby food, formula, and diapers, as they are often in high demand. Baby food and formula must not be past expiration date and unopened.

5. Does HCCM accept personal hygiene or household products?

  • Answer: Yes, we love to receive donations of personal hygiene products (like soap, shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant and toilet paper) and household items (like dish soap, laundry detergent). These items are often in great demand and short supply and can greatly benefit families in need.

6. Can I donate money instead of food?

  • Answer: HCCM does accept financial donations. Monetary contributions allow us to purchase fresh food, special items, or larger quantities of food to meet specific needs. You can donate online here: https://hccm.org/get-involved/.  If desired, you can specify that your donation goes to purchase food.

7. Can I donate non-food items like clothes or toys?

  • Answer: Clothing and household items can be donated to our thrift store.  Our clients receive vouchers to get free clothing at the thrift store, and our community gets to purchase these items at a greatly discounted price!  Our thrift store is located at 1501 Leander Drive, Bldg. C in Leander.  Donation hours are Monday - Saturday from 10am - 4pm.

8. How can I donate food to HCCM food Pantry?

  • Answer: Donations can be dropped off directly at the pantry’s location (1005 Lacy Drive, Leander) during our normal business hours of Monday – Friday from 9am-12pm or 1pm-3pm (we are closed from 12pm-1pm).  We also have extended hours until 7pm on Thursdays.  You may also request a receipt for your donation.

We appreciate your generosity and support!
