Turning Personal Experience Into Service

Many of our local Scouts choose Hill Country Community Ministries as the focus of their Eagle Scout or Gold Award projects. Most recently, Michael Dial partnered with HCCM for a project inspired by his own journey living with Type 1 Diabetes. Wanting to support others facing the same challenges, Michael created diabetic emergency kits for individuals in need throughout our community.

Michael assembled 100 emergency kits designed to provide essential backup supplies and resources for managing Type 1 Diabetes when standard options may not be readily available. His project included researching cost-effective kit contents, gathering and assembling materials, and donating the completed kits to HCCM. He also provided educational materials to help individuals with Type 1 Diabetes prepare for emergencies and better manage their health and safety during difficult situations.

Each kit included:

  • A canvas bag
  • Gummy packets
  • Honey packets or sticks
  • Meat sticks or jerky
  • Bandages, gloves, and wipes for blood sugar testing
  • Backup batteries for insulin pumps or other devices
  • An emergency information card
  • A small water bottle

Michael also spent several hours at the pantry personally distributing kits to clients. The remaining kits were left with HCCM for future requests, and many have already been distributed to community members in need. In addition to raising funds to purchase the supplies, Michael donated the remaining proceeds from his project to HCCM.

We are grateful for Michael’s compassion, dedication, and hard work in creating a meaningful project that supports individuals living with diabetes in our community.
